Question:
Diazepam Question?
2007-10-02 17:01:46 UTC
I have a long running issue with addictions of all kinds. I have recently been prescribed 10MG Diazepam to help with insomnia and anxiety. Two questions really;
A) at 5ft 1 and 6 stone is 10MG too much?
B) should I be feeling 'stoned' well into the next day right until the next dosage?
oops 3 questions, how addictive is Diazepam?

I know I am at the edge of a nervous breakdown but I don't want to replace one problem with another, i.e. relief from the depression/insomnia/anxiety only to be faced with a new addiction to Diazepam.

Many thanks

A) 10mg isnt too much, though i would have preferred your doctor to start off at a lower dose of 2.5-5 mg rather than jump to 10mg.

B) yes you can get a hangover effect with diazepam but it gradually wears off with time.

C) i know of patients to be on diazepam for years, it can be addictive in the sense that you would get rebound insomnia if you suddenly stop.

well your doctor has prescribed diazepam for a a reason- to help you over your acute phase- of depression/insomnia and anxiety, so its a temperory measure, once you are better diazepam can be stopped. besides drugs your doctor should enrol you in therapy- such as behavioural therapy to help you to sort out the root of your problems.

I'm not sure all I know is Diazepam can become addictive. Have you thought about talking to therapist about how you are feeling? Tablets are only a temporary help and can help with the symptoms but not the cause of the problems.

I have anxiety depression and have been trying an alternative therapy called Emotional Freedom Technique and it has really worked for me and helped me a lot. Since using it I have been feeling a lot better. It's very good at getting rid of all kinds of negative emotions and dealing with all kinds of issues quickly. It does sound bizarre but does work. Might be something that can you.

Addiction versus Reliance is a bug bear of mine. You wouldn't accuse a patient with Heart Arrythmia of being "addicted" to Flecainide!!

And by default addiction is only a problem when supply is cut off, or effect starts to wain. There is no reason to assume a decreasing effect over the passage of time alone, and supply would only be an issue between yourself and your Physician. In any event, better a few good years than none at all is my point of view.....

It always seems to come down to the individual and their specific reaction to any given drug, only you will know what your body is telling you.

I have a daily intake of 6mg of Clonazepam, and I'm told it is 20 times stronger than Diazepam. So would I need 120mg of Diazepam for the same effect? If the answer is yes, then I'd damn well take them and do what my body told me was right.

My routine took some time to "build up to". Once past the 'hangover' phase, I gradually shifted half my dose spread through the daytime, and the other 3mg at bedtime all in one go.

It's been a revelation for me in terms of sleep, now being able to get 4 or 5 hours of stage 4 sleep has transformed my world, and heres hoping it continues. I also take the daily max of Tramadol and Dihydrocodeine and Zopiclone all related to chronic pain/insomnia.

Life without these drugs for me is bed bound 24/7 with pain levels higher than an end stage cancer sufferer (I'm told).

Addicted? Poppycock!!

Reliant? You're damn right! And wild horses would not get me off my current regime after having tried avery 30 different drugs and combos, this is the best quality of life I can get from ANY current medical options (including IV Lidocaine!).

I always try new prescription drugs under strict professional medical guidance and my Doctor knows far too well that on the benefit versus risk scale, this is by far my best option.

Go With your gut and with the knowledge of your Doc.

Good luck

Diazepam (Valium) is a benzodiazepine, a class of drugs used for anxiety, insomnia, muscle relaxation, and seizures.

Diazepam has a long half-life in the body, which varies from person to person, but can be up to five days. That means if you take one dose you still have half of it in your body five days later. So if you are feeling stoned, that would not be unexpected.

The manufacturer's recommended dosage for treatment of anxiety is 2 to 10 mg, 2 to 4 times daily. So 10 mg is at the top of the dosage range, but if you only take it before bed, it isn't a big dose.

The diazepines as a class can be addictive if taken for months. I answered a question the other day about benzodiazepine addiction, and my internet search turned up (in several places) a reference to the Ashton Manual, which was written by a doctor who has spent most of her career studying benzodiazepines and withdrawal. The complete manual is available online, and I gave you a link to it.

If you are on the edge of a nervous breakdown, this is a good drug to calm you. If you have addiction issues, I suggest you not take it more than a month or so. Please talk to your doctor about alternatives.

It sounds like your daily dose could be a bit too high. Ask your doctor to reduce it, and see what happens. Ideally, you should be prescribed to lowest dose which is effective for your sleep and anxiety problems.

Diazepam is not addictive in the true sense of the word, but you can become dependant on it, especially if you take it for more than a month or two. I think what you must judge though, is whether your overall state of functioning is better taking this drug. If the answer is yes, then there is no real harm in continuing this medication, as long as you don't start increasing the dose or self-medicating.

Seems like quite a high dose to start off with and you will have hangover effects the next day.

Diazepam is addictive but if taken under medical supervision and you are weaned off slowly it should be okay.

Ask your GP for alternative therapies eg counselling, cognitive therapy etc

If you are still struggling to increase you are straight and you are hoping to get both hands over the edge, set Vert Shock to the check, an application that you will believe it is here https://tr.im/AYHiB  and provide it a take to, you'll be surprised of how quickly you can become an animal hopper if you teach the best way.

The program won't allow you to leap a large number of occasions because Vert Shock was made and employed by real elite level basketball players.

When it comes down seriously to it, if you really want to jump higher, you just discovered the very best system in the world to do so. Any other way would merely be described as a spend of time.

Don't ever take the sleeping pills route!!

1. They will damage your liver big time and you can get into serious health problems.

2. You will get hooked up on them and you won't be able to have a normal life any more if you don't take your pills everyday.

The sleeping pills industry is damaging our health by capitalizing on our ignorance, and by distracting people from effective and natural ways to deal with this problem. I had been taking prescription sleep medications [Ambien] for over 5 years. It stopped working and I simply took more. Still did not work. Nights were very difficult - medication put me to sleep but I would wake up after 2–3 hours with a strong sympathetic response (fast pulse, pounding heartbeat, wide awake alert). It was a very difficult cycle to break. I was really in bad shape due to lack of sleep.

After years of struggling I was able to cure my insomnia naturally and pretty fast. I followed the Sleep Tracks sleep optimization program, here is their official web -site if you want to take a look: http://www.insomniacure.net

Ohhh..and Good Luck!
